Scale Conversions

A number of our products, crosses, stars, letters and numbers in particular, are pretty universal in scope. Our newer releases (as of July'03) list size of letters in decimal inches to ease scale conversions. For example, LW-103 states letters are 30" and 36" in 1/300 scale and lists them as .10 and .12" respectively. The 30" and 36" are the sizes in 1/300 scale. The actual size of the characters is .10 and .12". At 1/100 scale, these would be .10*100 = 10" and .12*100=12" respectively. At 1/72 scale, they would be .10*72 = 7.2" and .12*7.2 = 8.6" respectively. Conversely, at 1/1200 scale, they would be .10*1200=120" and .12*1200=144" respectively.

Without editorializing, we believe a number of the 'scale' nomenclature within wargaming to be wrong. For example, 15mm is a size, not a scale. 15mm equaling something definable is a scale, i.e.,  15mm=1800mm, the height of a man (at a bit under 5'11"), for example, is a scale, and it is 1/120 (15/1800) arithmetically. If the subject represents a man at 5'6" (168 cm, 1680 mm), then the scale is approximately 1:112, less than a 7% variation. People come in different heights, and variation is good. But, a vehicle or airplane has distinct physical measurements which are relatively indisputable and can be quantified. That said, we acknowledge the trade descriptions and our products are sized accordingly.
